Founded in 1949 with 12 original countries – 10 Western European countries and the U.S. NATO provides collective defense for its members so that an attack on one is considered an attack on all. NATO’s expansion has become a flashpoint for Putin, as has the potential in the future of Ukraine’s NATO membership.
Their support in turn would be met by democratic countries’ cooperating politically, economically and militarily. During a conflict such as in Ukraine or potentially in Taiwan, autocracies might support one another through diplomatic backing, economic cooperation and military assistance.
